The health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis continue to evolve almost day to day in Texas. And for many Texans who are now unemployed and other low-income families across the state, keeping the lights on has become a serious concern.

On March 26, Central Texas Interfaith and Texas IAF helped win a moratorium on utilities cut-offs for low-income or unemployed customers in deregulated markets including Houston, Dallas, Waco, and Williamson County.

The Rev. Miles Brandon from St. Julian of Norwich Episcopal in Round Rock spoke as a representative for both organizations. He testified before the Texas Public Utilities Commission, urging commissioners to halt the cutoff of utilities due to the economic upheaval caused by COVID-19.

“COVID-19 is causing uncertainty and many hardships,” said Rev. Brandon. “During this time, Central Texas Interfaith and our partner organizations in Texas IAF don’t want Texas citizens to have their physical or financial health put in danger unnecessarily.”
