$5 million state funding opportunity opens for community-based maternal health programs

HHSC accepting applications through February 5 for new grants to improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce severe maternal complications in Texas.

Texas organizations working to improve maternal health have a new funding opportunity to consider.

Through the recently approved state budget, Texas set aside $5 million for community-based maternal health programs focused on reducing severe pregnancy complications and improving outcomes for moms and babies. That funding is now available through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

This opportunity is designed to support systems-level and data-driven work that strengthens existing maternal health programs. While the funding does not support direct clinical care, it can be used to improve coordination, technology, partnerships, and program infrastructure that help communities deliver better maternal health outcomes.

HHSC is encouraging applications that focus on communities with higher needs and higher rates of severe maternal complications, as well as approaches that build sustainable, community-based solutions.

Here’s what to know about the timeline:
• Applications are due February 5
• Multiple awards are expected
• Projects will run from July 2026 or contract execution through August 31, 2028

At EHF, we are encouraged to see state investments that align with the work many community partners are already leading across Texas to strengthen maternal health systems and remove barriers to care.
