Texas is currently implementing HB 26 which authorizes Medicaid managed care organizations to offer nutrition support services in lieu of other (ILOS) state plan benefits. While Texas is taking the ILOS approach, multiple other states have implemented food and other NMDOH interventions through Medicaid 1115 waivers. The Texas MCO NMDOH Learning Collaborative hosted a webinar to learn about some of those states’ experiences implementing interventions through Medicaid 1115 waivers.
Results from two large-scale pilots in Massachusetts and North Carolina indicate that nutrition and housing programs can reduce total healthcare spending and healthcare utilization, especially among adult participants. In the webinar Dr. Seth Berkowitz (University of North Carolina School of Medicine) and Dr. Kurt Hager (UMass Medical School) compare and contrast research findings and implications for Medicaid policy moving forward. You can learn more by watching the recording of the webinar and reviewing the slides.
