SUMMARY:EHF Mental Health Learning Network Series | December 2023
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Congregational Engagement Team will offer a virtual Mental Health Learning Network Series to support congregations as they promote mental health in their communities. The Learning Network is the next step for Episcopal congregations looking for imaginative ways to connect\, deepen strategies for promoting mental health and well-being\, and gain experience using virtual meeting platforms to invite meaningful conversation. \nThe sessions will have two primary goals:\n1) Increasing participants’ knowledge related to mental health and well-being\, particularly through the lens of social justice; and 2) Building connections across congregations in Texas with similar interests in promoting congregational and community well-being. \nSession 6 | December 5\, 2023\nREGISTER HERE! \nBuilding Places of Belonging for the LGBTQIA Communities\nTuesday\, December 5\, 2023 | 12 PM to 1:30 PM\nFacilitated by: Mx. Shane Whalley\nPronouns: ze/hir/hirs\n\n\nWorkshop Overview:\nPeople who are LGBTQIA can face mental health challenges because they are navigating a culture that is not always kind to them. They are often looking for supportive people and organizations where they are loved for who they are. Places where they can bring their full selves and feel a strong sense of belonging. In this workshop\, we will talk about why this is an important\, we will go over the differences between sexual orientation\, gender identity and gender expression and we will discuss ways to best support people who are LGBTQIA. You will leave with information\, skills\, ways to take action\, and resources.\n\nObjectives:\nBy the end of the workshop participants will be able to:\n• Describe the difference between sexual orientation\, birth assigned sex\, gender identity and gender expression\n• Analyze the barriers that people who are LGBTQIA face\n• Navigate vocabulary and pronouns\n• Explore local and national resources.\n\nA Notes from the Facilitator…\nAs a deeply relational and playful genderqueer facilitative educator\, I have been facilitating workshops and conversations on issues faced by the LGBTQIA communities\, cultural humility and responsiveness\, and social justice frameworks for over 20 years. My knowledge comes from my lived experience as a now elder within the genderqueer and queer communities. My lifelong journey as a learner brought me to the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin where I completed my Master’s in 2003 and continued as an adjunct faculty member to the present day. I enjoy engaging in conversations around the complexities of “all the things” whether as a mentor\, consultant\, or educator.\n  \nREGISTER HERE!
